SMP Volunteers

Meet volunteers.

The SMP program provides an opportunity for seniors to step up and make an impact in the fight against fraud. The dedicated corps of SMP volunteers makes a difference.

In 2012, SMP projects had 5,137 active volunteers. Expected Medicare and Medicaid funds recovered that were attributable to the projects were $6 million. Savings to beneficiaries and others totaled $133,971, and cost avoidance on behalf of Medicare, Medicaid, beneficiaries, and others was $113,692. Finally, one project provided information to federal prosecutors for a case that eventually resulted in a $12.9 million settlement (Source: July 2013 Performance Report)

SMP volunteers work in their local communities to empower and assist Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, errors, and abuse through outreach, counseling and education.

Since 1997, over 35,000 volunteers have helped the SMP Program educate and serve 63 million people.

Become a Volunteer

Volunteers use their time and experience to help your peers protect their identity, read their Medicare Summary Notices, and avoid getting taken by scammers. They work one-on-one with beneficiaries, give presentations to groups, and represent the SMP at events.

They don't do it alone. SMPs prepare volunteers for this important work with seminars, personalized help, and information they can take home to study.

The future integrity of the health care system depends upon you. Join the effort to help save our precious health care dollars for the care that you may some day need. Find an SMP program in your state by clicking here.
