SMP Orientation
Before beginning work with the SMP, all volunteers receive
orientation to:
- The purpose and values of the SMP
- The nature and operation of the program or activity for which they
are recruited
- The purpose, duties and requirements of the role that they are
accepting
An SMP Orientation: Sample Template has been prepared,
which you should customize to your state’s needs. It includes
a form for volunteers to assess their interests, based upon the types of
volunteer work available.
For additional information, see the VRPM Policy Implementation Guide, Policy 3.66:
Orientation.
Volunteer Handbook
A Volunteer Handbook is now available that
provides an introduction for volunteers who are new to the SMP
program.
The Volunteer Handbook contains information about:
- The program’s mission and background
- Volunteer rights and responsibilities
- Volunteer roles
- Performance management, including separation from the program
The Volunteer Handbook is designed to be customized by each SMP prior
to distribution and has several sections where SMPs should expect to add
information about their state and local programs.
