A 67-year-old received a phone call regarding cardiac genetic screening from someone claiming to be from Medicare. She did a phone consult with someone she thought was a doctor, received a screening kit, and took a test. She got thousands of dollars of bills for services she says she never needed. Telemedicine has made health care more accessible, but telemedicine scams have risen rapidly since the pandemic. Telemedicine is a very important technology that provides lifesaving care for some people, but it’s prone to abuse. The Department of Justice says if you think you’ve received a fraudulent bill, call your local FBI office or the Senior Medicare Patrol. Watch an NBC News video.
